In 1906, an asteroid measuring about 50 feet in diameter exploded over the Siberian wilderness, causing an explosion of 20 megatons in force and levelling a forested area of nearly 1,000 square miles. Had the asteroid arrived just six hours earlier, it would've exploded over St. Petersburg, taking hundreds of thousands of lives. Even smaller asteroids, 10 feet in diameter or less, are capable of causing a significant disaster if it impacts in a large urban area. Earth has been lucky to avoid such impacts in modern history, but such impacts occur roughly once a decade, and it's not likely that humanity will continue to avoid such disasters over time.

With Israel losing International support and Obama entering into the Oval Office Israel may launch a pre-emptive strike into Iran. Recently Israel asked the Bush Administration for military support to perform a pre-emptive strike but was turned down 3 times. Israel will continue to request support during Obama's Administration but may proceed alone to prevent Iran from aquiring nuclear weapons. However, a pre-emptive strike will be difficult without support from the U.S. If Iran does aquire nukes we will see the prophecy of Ezekiel 36 become a reality.

I have spent years researching the field of geodesic domes and I have found that the dodecahedron dome structure is the STRONGEST of all of the domes. We at 7th Haven Development have researched yurts, earth bag, tire homes, straw bale, cargo containers, etc. and we have found that our dodecahedron dome is the most cost effective, most energy efficient and certainly one of the easiest to build. So if you can offer a 32 foot diameter dome with 800 sq ft on the ground floor and 200 sq ft in an optional loft/balcony area for $40,410 COMPLETE would that not be a VERY affordable solution? Also our dome superstructure is color coded for easy Tinkertoy like construction and has no screws, bolts, latches, nails, etc as it goes completely together with wooden pegs. Then we cover it with plywood triangles and an out covering called HydroStop all in 3 DAYS! We are confident enough that we have committed to building 7,000,000 domes around the world in the next 7 years for the homeless. We began the campaign 1/1/09.

Italian auto giant Fiat now own 35% of Chrysler. Is this the start of a move to take full control of the ailing US company? From the NY Times: Negotiators discussed giving Fiat the option to eventually increase its stake in Chrysler to 55 percent, giving it majority control, a person with knowledge of the talks said Monday. That would return Chrysler to foreign ownership So does this mean more Italian cars coming to the US? Maserati, Alfa Romeo anyone? Fiat could bring many of its compact innovations like the Punto, 500 Minicar, etc to the US market which would probably welcome in these times of expensive fuel prices. On the other hand Chrysler's own recent experience with the Daimler merger should also serve as an example of the possible lack of synergies between U.S. and European carmakers. So, will Fiat go for the whole pizza or be happy with just a big slice?

So is he really dead, even in the future? Or does Jack need to take him back to the island to somehow revive him? Maybe he faked his own death? Is this version of Locke a clone of his real self in a different reality? These are important questions. Rumored as, "the most anticipated Google product so far", Google are currently keeping quiet about their GDrive concept which is basically online storage Google-style (so it's going to be quite funky). The Google Drive, or "GDrive", could kill off the desktop computer, which relies on a standard hard drive. Instead a user's personal files and operating system could be stored on Google's own servers and accessed via the internet. The rumored specs and issues are here. This is the beginning of the end for the traditional PCs, with the growth of software services such as Google Docs, Flickr, Zoho, etc, etc. But the concept is already raising concerns over potential privacy and security issues. The rumors have been further fuelled by the strange deletion of GDrive related info in a the publishing website Scribd and some geeky detective work in their current code. Google refused to confirm the GDrive, but acknowledged the growing demand for cloud computing. So will we see this in Beta by this summer or is this just an unconfirmed piece of wishful thinking?

Another battle of big screen sequels hits our cinemas this summer with the release of Christian Bale's Terminator Salvation in May 2009 and megatronic Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in June 2009. There has already been some rivarly between the filmmakers as Michael Bay apparently accused the T4 makers of ripping off his Transformers robot designs. T4 is rumored to feature a cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger himself which would be interesting. How are they going to work the aged Terminator's looks into the storyline? Maybe Terminator's go into retirement somewhere? The Terminator following is massive but Christian Bale isn't making any friends with his recent flip on set (check out the remix). On the other hand Michael Bay's sequel to the runaway success of Transformers features a bigger budget, bigger storyline and more robot effects. He's also teamed up again with the US defense department to get access to some tasty locations. Nice. It was also the most popular movie trailer at the Super Bowl this year. Nice analysis here. So the scene is set for the battle of the robots...it's going to be a big summer! Who's going to win the box office battle by Autumn?

Amazon will today announce the launch of their Amazon Kindle 2 ebook. The new and improved version fixes several issues with the Kindle 1 and beefs up the feature list. Leaked photos make it out to be a super sleek portable design. Whilst no one can argue that the ebook market is growing quickly, does anyone really want to shell out $349 for a dedicated ebook reader when they can get a iPhone, smartphone or event netbook laptop for almost the same price? The Kindle is a single use device where as an iPhone has a million other possibilities. See a good debate here at Techcrunch. Sony and Amazon both have competing products in the ebook market. Sony has the PRS-700BC which boasts touch screen but no wireless connectivity. So does this product have a long term future or is it a pre-cursor to bettering ebook services on other mobile gadget and devices? Let's see if if folds by this time next year.

The UK's base interest rate is now at 1% but is a further drop to 0% needed to stimulate spending and growth further? It seems quite likely. But is this really the way to stimulate growth again or is this just like economic botox - a temporary benefit designed to make us feel better? OK, while Nostradamical.com site is based on creating relevant and verifiable predictions on future events, it's also perfect for recording totally wild speculations such as the growing hysteria that the world will end on December 21st, 2012. The date marks the end of a 5,126-year cycle on the Long Count calendar developed by the Maya. Yes folks even CNN is in on it. The whole concept has spawned a complete industry of related books, preparations and other 'useful' products such as shelters. Why? Well the whole thing is based on apparently a combination of Mayan prophecy and some other semi-scientific mumbo jumbo. More below. There's even a film planned starring John Cusask - good going guys. This prediction, despite being a little morbid serves as a reminder of the alternative Republican universe that could have been... Sarah Palin, president? If McCain would have won the election and passed away during his first term of course wild eyed Sarah Palin would have been US president. Will California legalize marijuana with bill AB 390?

SF Weekly broke a story this week that Assemblyman Tom Ammiano will announce legislation to legalise pot in California. This has understandably spawned massive debate on the pros and cons of such legalisation. In essence, bill AB 390 would, "Remove all penalties under California law for the cultivation, transportation, sale, purchase, possession, and use of marijuana, natural THC and paraphernalia by persons over the age of 21," "prohibit local and state law enforcement officials from enforcing federal marijuana laws". More here. The move would enable regulation of prices and importantly taxation. You can read the full text of the bill from this Digg story. The move has far reaching political and economic implications not just for California, but for other countries battling the debate - particularly given recent reports that marijuana can be linked to testicular cancer (for example). In the UK cannabis was raised in classification from a class C to class b drug. How can too countries be moving in such different directions on this issue? So what do you think? Will California legalise marijuana over the next 2 years?

US recording artist Chris Brown recently hit the headlines for flipping out and beating up hottie girlfriend Rihanna. No charges have been pressed so far but is this the start of a downward trend like other similarly violent celebrities (think Mike Tyson), or does this star have some staying power? According to Mama Pop: "Truth be told, Chris probably won't serve jail time. Very few batterers do. If he is found guilty, and I don't want to discount that he has not been found guilty of anything, he hasn't even been charged with anything, he will probably do anger management and counseling and go on his merry way." When you consider the growth of Facebook's population, it's reasonable to assume that at current growth rates it could conceivably overtake the population of china (1,330,044,605 people as of mid-2008) in the next 4 years. Now...this of course assumes that the web keeps growing and Facebook doesn't hit a ceiling. But that of course is a reasonable assumption, given for example the curent growth rates of developing countries' web presences. And don't forget China's own web presence. Check out Facebook's growth rates over the last 3 years from 2006. As of today Facebook claims to have 175 million users... Hmmm, what do you think?

Uber-networking darling Twitter continues to grow and grow amid a blurb of blog chatter on how it can evolve and monetize itself. So, let's take a look at the most obvious way it can monetize? Sponsored Tweets... By this I mean Tweets that have been paid for. Annoying? Yes. Difficult to police? Certainly. But think of how free radio, texts, etc are brought to the public on other platforms...the model is basically, 'you get the service free as long as you don't mind seeing the occasional paid message'. I agree this model is tenuous and could lead to even more annoying commercial messaging amongst an already cluttered stream of noise. So why not combine his model with a team of human drones that trawl Twitter accounts to flag up blatant marketing spammers, threatening to shut them down or pay to advertise? This could work...maybe... Check out some further discussion from back in 2007 on Download Squad on how Twitter can monetize, including the obvious 'pro account'. So, will be see 'sponsored tweets' or a similar mechanism taking control of the Twittersphere anytime soon?

Location-aware social networking is the 'next big thing', with a horde of new startups building social networks around location awareness (where you or something physically is at any one time). TechCrunch outlined some nice iPhone based apps in September which included Loopt, Moximity, Whrrl, Where, Limbo, and my personal favourite - BrightKite. These networks are all great but let's face it, the biggest success factor behind a social network's success is it's user base and thus momentum. Technology itself can be easily bought these days via acquisitions. So, keep in mind as well that location-aware stuff is still very niche and specific to small groups of social networking nuts. And who better to adopt a new toy than the millions of teenagers on MySpace? Of course there's Facebook too... But for now I am predicting that despite not yet moving into this space MySpace will acquire a smaller location-aware network and incorporate it into the lives of those millions of teenagers drooling over the next 'cool thing'. Let's give it 2 years. Seems logical right?

The World Health Organisation's (WHO) current Swine Flu Pandemic alert status is level 5, which is characterised as: "human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short." Will it move to level 6 within the next month? check the current status here on the WHO website. Level 6 is not as scary as it sounds, given we are already at Level 5: "Phase 6: In addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5, the same virus has caused sustained community level outbreaks in at least one other country in another WHO region." A string of F1 teams are threatening to quit Formula 1 at the end of this season unless the 2010 rules are changed to make a for a fairer playing field. Ferrari are the latest team threatening to pull out: "If the regulations adopted for 2010 will not change, then Ferrari does not intend to enter its cars in the next Formula One World Championship," a statement said. The Italian team have threatened to withdraw in the past, most recently in October after Max Mosley made proposals for a standard engine for all teams. Renault announced today they are also ready to back out. Toyota and Red Bull, who also own Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso, have already threatened not to enter next year's championship unless the new rules published by Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, are changed. The FIA has set a deadline of 29 May for teams wishing to compete in 2010 to submit entries and state whether they want a cap or not. So will Ferrari back out?

On May 25, 2009, North Korea announced that it had conducted a second nuclear test (first in 2006) which attracted outrage and critisism from countries around the world. Slightly more worrying is that according to Sky News North Korea has a boat load of nukes pointed at the US: North Korea has at least 100 nuclear missiles aimed at the United States and will use them if new economic sanctions are imposed against it, a spokesman claims. The US hopes to encourage North Korea to back down on its nuclear weapons program and is collaborating with South Korea, Japan, China and Russia to establish a new dialogue. It will work by eliminating what its supporters view as a “loophole” that, in many cases, allows Americans to shop over the Internet without paying sales taxes. According to ButAsForMe News: "Currently, Americans who shop over the Internet from out-of-state vendors aren’t always required to pay sales taxes at the time of purchase. Californians buying books from Amazon.com or cameras from Manhattan’s B&H Photo, for example, won’t pay sales taxes at checkout time that they would if shopping at a local mall because they have no physical place of business in the same state as the buyer." Grrrr, the fact that O2 have the exclusive iPhone contract continues to annoy everyone that's on other networks. I heard a rumour last year that Orange were going to get the iPhone and I have to say I was pretty excited! However another year on and with the iPhone 3G S just launched (see great reviews over at Mashable) it's really time for Apple to start sharing the love on other networks. Orange France are already selling iPhones but there has not been any site of them through Orange UK yet. However, more recently TechRadar posted a rumour about Orange having iPhone related info on its intranet: "The long-rumbling chat that O2 is set to lose exclusivity on the iPhone has taken another turn as the iPhone 3G has turned up on Orange's intranet." The rumours are hotting up again. So will we see some healthy competition in the UK iPhone market this year? I hope so!

There is too much world pressure and competition to allow the US to sustain low interest rates. The number of dollars required to buy Chinese goods has to inflate in the coming year. We don't produce enough to be competitive in the world market and sustain a decent trade balance. Our "free trade" policies will bite us in the butt. This will force all interest rates higher in 2010 - including home mortgages which will be a major drag on the recovery of the housing market.

General McChrystal, the leader of the US and Coalition forces in Afghanistan, announced in a public speech that he was requesting 40,000 additional troops for Afghanistan. Obama does not want to be trapped into expanding this "war of necessity." Gates (Sec Def) was upset about the end-run around the chain of command. I believe Obama will announce only modest troop increases, and after a decent interval McChrystal will announce his own "retirement." Might happen in 2009, but certainly by March 2010.

This weekend, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that US unemployment figures had broken the 10% threshold in October. The milestone is a 26-year high for unemployment. “This will have a chilling effect on consumer confidence and business confidence,” said Joseph Brusuelas, a director at Moody’s Economy.com in West Chester, Pennsylvania. “It does look like unemployment will creep much higher.” With the economy set to follow a slow recovery and Obama's reducing popularity after his first year in office confidence will continue to falter for those invested in the US economy.
