CERN, known as 'European Organization for Nuclear Research' (translated from the French, 'Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire') opened for business this month. It is the most ambitious science experiment to date and is centred around the Large Hadron Collider. Initial testing got off a bumpy start but the organisation plans to have it back up and running over the next few weeks. An international collaboration of scientists are working on cutting edge partical physics with the hope of discovering, 'the secret of the universe'. Fanatics say that these scientists could inadvertedly create a black hole that will swallow the earth. Who knows, but it would certainly make headlines. What do you think?

It's no accident that the X Factor series is planned to run through the Autumn schedule with the final only a few weeks before Xmas. Just in time for the winner to rush into the studio and churn out another dollop of pop plastic for our hungry Christmas shoppers. So, short of any other 'serious' artists hitting the charts last minute with a suitable anthem (Cliff Richard?) it is a safe bet that we'll be skipping along to another pre-fab pop creation fresh from the X Factor studios. The Bank of England has kept interest rates on hold at 5% for a fifth month as it struggles to deal with a slowing economy and soaring inflation. According to the BBC, Chancellor Alistair Darling heightened concerns about the resilience of the economy when he said recently that conditions facing the UK and other countries were "arguably the worst in 60 years"". Eek!

Madonna is worth over $500 million and pundits estimate Guy could pocket as much as $100 million from Madonna before Xmas. Madonna on the other hand may ascert that she took most of this into her marriage so should be able to take it away. A popular line taken in high profile divorces where big money is involved. In keeping with all genuinely good startups... the idea captivates the public imagination, the site gets instantly insanely popular and following several server crashes due to inappropriate bandwidth scaling, gets sold for an inordinate amount of money to a 'large corporation'. The site owner goes on to become a 'venture capitalist'. Meanwhile the original idea is bastardised into some evil twin of its former self (in this case the addition of a simple betting service alongside the predictions) and is used to prey on the unsuspecting masses, siphoning cash from their bank accounts faster than even the hackers can pharm the traffic to their own bogus endeavours. Evil indeed!

Due for release on 25th November, Guns N' Roses eagerly awaited follow up album to 'Use Your Illusion' in 1991, will no doubt sweep the US and Europe by storm. Now that Obama has won the election he has the busy task of assembling his administration. Will Hillary Clinton be part of that administration? It seem likely. However earlier in the election there was plenty of tension between the candidates, as this video shows. So as that all behind them? The Clintons have dominated the Democrats for many years and took a strong hand in supporting this year's election. Their political power is obvious and would be a great support for Obama, but on the other hand he runs the risk of creating an administration too close to the Clinton administration itself. Hilariously, due to some vote rigging at this year's MTV’s Europe Music Awards Rick Astley of 80s pop fame was voted 'Best Act Ever' at the site bestactever.com. He received 95% of the votes! Apparently this is all down to some screw up and he won't be collecting the award. A shame. However clearly this could be the start of a comeback or sorts. Will we see him back in the charts of the next few months? Stats from bestactever.com:

The trend from the Bank of England to fight the onset of deep recession is to cut interest rates in the hope that the lenders will follow etc.... The recent cut by 1.5% is a great move - but is it enough? Probably not. Further cuts in the next 6 months are very likely.

Dead or alive, will the world's favourite terrorist finally be found in 2009? Obama vows to 'kill him' if needed but surely that would mean we would never have undeniable evidence that he was caught and it was not part of another conspiracy theory? According to several sources he is dead already. He died several years ago and the threat is being perpetuated by the US government for obvious political and military reasons. A more serious overview from MSNBC is right here. The last videotape from him was back in 2001 literally years ago. And just in case you want to track the issue more closely keep an eye on the FBI's Most Wanted People site.

Google Chrome web browser just went out of Beta phase. Early promises wants the browser to be multiplatform, as many Google developers even use Mac or Linux as their main OS. Chrome is a new browser, fast in javascript rendering, that could improve user experience in Web 2.0 applications. Google, as main 2.0 web services provider, has great interested in it. Upcoming events as MacWorld, could be used as stages to present new competitors (as Safari updates..) in the browser war. Google maybe wants to give a sprint.. What do you think? will Google release a Mac and / or Linux official version of his brand new Chrome within few days? Or will they work on it later?!

Heath Ledger's lightning performance in The Dark Knight was really inspiring this year. It would be a great moment to see him receive a posthumous Oscar for his performance as The Joker opposite Christian Bale. Sadly he died on the 22nd January 2008 during the filming before The Dark Knight was released. Somewhat sadly his death was voted the top entertainment story of 2008. The Oscar nominations will be published on the 22nd January 2008 with the 81st Annual Academy Awards themselves being held in Hollywood on Sunday 22nd February 2008. Let's watch and wait.

We've all heard the stories of global warming. Global temperatures have increased slightly in the past hundred years, and forecasters say that it could cause a great problem. A lengthened representation of the Earth's global temperatures show a roller coaster ride, up-down-up-down (hot to cold, cold to hot). Even though temperatures may begin to fall, the current temperature bears watching. With these increased temperatures, forecasters say that storms could get more severe. With warmer ocean temperatures, hurricanes could be stronger and more severe. Based on just this, I would be strongly toward at least 5 major hurricanes hitting. The low likelihood of this in my opinion is that there must be ideal conditions in the atmosphere for a hurricane to develop. There has to be almost no or no wind shear, warm ocean temperatures, a moist environment, and many other factors have to be taken in consideration during the formation of one of these deadly storms.
